Overview

Located in the heart of Cleburne, Texas, The Prickly Pear Restaurant shines as a genuine American eatery that draws in locals and visitors alike. This spot at 4103 TX-174 serves comfort food with a Southwest twist, echoing the flavors of traditional diners across the region.

Their signature dish, the chicken fried steak, earns solid praise for its hearty, familiar taste that recalls classic Western cafes from New Mexico to Texas. Paired with creamy mashed potatoes, it offers a satisfying plate that strikes a nostalgic chord. Beyond that, the menu features standout sides like jalapeño cornbread, buttery yeast rolls, fried mushrooms that delight with their crisp texture, and a mac and cheese that comforts with its simple richness.

One unique highlight is their chili—an off-menu gem that regulars recommend seeking out. It speaks to the kitchen's readiness to surprise and cater to those who appreciate authentic, bold flavors. Customers frequently mention the generous portions, making to-go boxes a near necessity, which reflects both value and a commitment to abundance.

Service here is attentive without being intrusive. The owner’s personal touch, stopping by each table, adds a warm layer to the dining experience, fostering a welcoming, small-town atmosphere. The staff's friendliness complements the hearty food, making each visit feel personal and engaging.

The Prickly Pear sits comfortably as a spot for families, casual diners, and anyone craving honest American fare with regional flair. The space itself is unpretentious but inviting, perfectly suited for a relaxed meal where quality and comfort take center stage.

While a few details, like the use of gravy mix instead of homemade, may divide purists, the overall food quality and pleasant environment make The Prickly Pear a worthwhile stop. If you’re passing through Cleburne or looking for a dependable taste of Texas-style dining, this restaurant delivers with warmth, flavor, and a touch of local charm.

We went here based on the high reviews and weren't disappointed! Great Food, great service, and frendily folks! The Chicken Fried Steak and mashed potatoes reminded me of Western Cafe' in Cloudcroft NM and Homplate Diner in Lubbock. Do yourself a favor and stop in...soon!

Great service and the owner checks on every table. Fried mushrooms are like chips....very good! The chicken fried steak is above average but not great.if ordered the mac n cheese is good, okra is good the mashed taters are good. The best thing isn't even on the menu, the Chili. Ask for it since it's not always available. The jalapeno cornbread is really good and sweet. Hot and buttery yeast rolls are excellent too.

Great food. Pleasant atmosphere. Great waitresses. Would definitely recommend. Only gave it a 4 star rating due to the gravy was a mix and not homemade. If you use gravy mixes then you will be happy. Both people at my table that ate it do not eat gravy mixes. But it was still was good food.

We are from IN visiting relatives and they took us to the Prickly Pear.... and I'm so happy they did! Food came to the table hot.. always a huge PLUS.. and it was super delicious. I had fried chicken breast that was the best ever and it came with gravy which was a happy surprise. My husband had a steak that was cooked perfect. He asked for horseradish sauce n they didn't hv any so the cook quickly made him some! It was just so very very good.. and the restaurant was clean!!! Plus the waitress was polite and super nice and friendly. Great place for the family... and out of town relatives
